The United Nations have declared 2007 to be Year of the Dolphin

This will not help the cheerful creature much, as it is just one more feel-good action of our consumer society. I have had enough of on the one hand hearing about maximising profits, globalisation, commodity prices etc in the media, and on the other the United Nations, WWF etc. are supposed to look after our good consciences. I certainly cannot imagine that fishermen would give up their income from fishing in order to protect whales and dolphins, or consumers accept empty fish and meat counters.
One prominent example for media-savvy actionism to protect free animals was Paul McCartney and his soon-to-be ex-wife Heather Mills’ attempts to save seals in Canada. Now they are separated, and only the subjects that we really find important are being reported and argued about. With his wealth, Paul McCartney could have paid off all the seal clubbers if he was really interested in effective protection. But the seals are for it again this year, and the survivors will eventually starve because of over-fishing. Perhaps the quick death is better than starving slowly after all. The UN will then publish the results of an expensive study showing how the fish, dolphin and seal populations have crashed. We declare 2010 to be Year of the Mackerel! Creatures which cannot consume, like the free sea mammals, are not really appreciated and will go under sooner or later. Maybe we should build underwater shopping centres for cetaceans, so that they can consume too. Sea mammals would have a lobby then, and could survive, if they did not succumb to diabetes and/or high blood pressure. On the other hand these diseases create new opportunities for business, generating new lobbyists and profits.
Only the consumer decides the future of our planet and its remarkable nature.
